Jack can use not only alsa and my alsa lmms-midi-config gets to dummy often, maybe because of changed alsa-device-#number or i'm not really sure why. If not, are you really sure you have the MIDI IN cable plugged into your keyboard MIDI OUT Why not just try the other cable and see what happens.
